At McMaster Design League’s (MDL) 2024 Designation, my team and I were challenged by the engineering design firm Cortex Design to design a Lateral Flow Assay diagnostic reader. This reader would be implemented in a household environment, allowing a more simplified and intuitive way of using medical diagnostic technology for patients in need.
The device utilizes a display with a GUI on the lid to instruct users on how to use the device. The device works by inserting a cartridge with the sample into the device, where a stepper motor will bring it in fully and mix the sample with a buffer solution. Afterward, a macro-lens camera placed above the sample will analyze the mixed solution, and the results will be displayed on the screen.
